What Is Liver Resection?

A liver resection (also called a hepatectomy) is an operation in which a portion of the liver is removed.

The remaining healthy liver continues to perform normal liver function and gradually increases in size over the following weeks and months.

Only the diseased portion of the liver is removed whenever possible.

The liver is unique because it can regenerate. After part of the liver is removed, the remaining liver gradually increases in size and function.
